Yeah, because that's the kind of insurance agent we should all be looking
for...
The newsgroup spamming kind.

Doesn't work on my browser. Too many gimmicks probably. Not a good sign.

Bulldog. Don't "optimize" for anything. It's certainly not necessary and
then you don't have angry potential customers...

5% on the internet is a lot of people and word travels *fast*.

Rubbish. You don't have to do anything special to accomodate everyone. You
have to muck around to prevent some from seeing your site.
BMW Europe guy:
-Learn how to use Usenet (newsgroups like alt.autos.bmw) responsibly -
Google will archive your posts for the foreseeable future (decades) and they
will be available to anyone with an internet connection. They way you're
using it now is considered abuse by many, and that's bad publicity.
-Use HTML so that everyone can see your site, or at least find a web
designer who knows how.
-DO NOT tell people which software they should or should not be using.
-Music on your website? Many people listen to music while surfing the
internet and we don't want whatever little jingle you've come up with to
interfere with our music.

Still haven't used a spell checker yet then?

Yup.
I'd just add:-
BMW main dealers in the UK are so appalling (in my experience) that any
decent independant competition is to be welcomed. But constant spamming
with just advertising puts, IMHO, most off in a big way.
If you can help with an answer - or even useful comment - on the problem
then do so, and have the 'ad' as a sig. That way you'll gain respect. See
how Brett Anderson does it as a model.

Hmm. I'd say those figures are inflated by all those who buy a computer
simply because it's the thing to have. The percentage of those who use the
things in anger might well tell a different story.
I do have IE available if required, but won't use it to visit a new
unknown site. Only one I really need to visit that won't work with my
usual one. And this site doesn't come under that heading. So one perhaps
potential UK customer lost. And I know personally of five others that this
applies to also...

You're *obviously* not in business. Business decisions are best made

Tell me which business decision 'made with the head' locks out potential
customers for no good reason? Apart from the BG sort, of course...
People visit this sort of website for information - where and how to
purchase the goods on offer etc - not for entertainment.
Perhaps one of the largest most visited websites is Ebay. They seem to be
able to make a site that isn't IE 'optimised'. And with as much
'functionality' as is likely to be needed.

I'm not defending MS, I'm simply saying that the cost of accommodating
1 in 20 should be related to the business benefit. If it costs me
twice as much to do it then, well, you do the math...

Who says it costs more? Probably quite the reverse - by leaving out all
the useless gimmicks.

You could be correct, although that has not been my experience. Time
was that I had web testing done using Nutscrape, aol, Mosaic, etc., as
well as the current and older versions of IE. Now, my testing is done
using current IE only.
Why don't you just surrender to the BillyWare steamroller? Resistance
is futile.

What? And spend a fortune on new soft and hardware every few months - not
to mention virus protection - and for what real benefit? A few crappy
websites selling things I don't want anyway?
I'll spend my hard earned on motoring, thanks.
