View Full Version : Dodging everything but the gas station

I am at my wits end on this dodge truck I have. I need some tips from a
carbourator or emissions specialist. I have an '85 dodge ram 50 pickup. The
thing is getting terrible mileage and shooting gas out the tailpipe. One guy
told me it's running too rich, which makes sense. It backfires around
corners. One guy said that's the float sticking. That makes sense. I'm
getting gas in my oil. Nobody seems to know what's causing that. One guy
said that could be caused by any number of things but couldn't tell me any.
I tend to think all of this is caused by an emissions problem. This Dodge
has a 2.0 Mitzubishi engine. By the way, I put a rebuilt carb on a couple of
months ago that I got from AutoZone. I didn't make ANY adjustments. I put it
on the way the old one came off. Is there anybody out there that might be
able to point me toward the cure? I would appreciate it. Thanks. Dicky

I hope you kept the old carb.
The problem is likely the Autozone carb. Their parts are crap. I don't
beleive for a second that Jessie James buys any thing from them except
oil.
Those old Mitsu carbs weren't the best and tough as hell to set up. I
doubt anyone from Autozone could set it up or even have a clue as to
what that means.
Best thing I can tell you to do is to try to find a old mechanic in
one of these Dodge dealers that can work on carbs. Be ready to bite
the bullet and pay a pro. I am warning you, I have a guy who can do
it, but its gonna cost you $$$$$.

Or, find a junkyard near you. The 85's should still be in season for
another couple years, I bet, and if nothing else you might even find a
newer one with the same engine. I would try to find one that has been
wrecked. That way, you know it was on the road when its usefulness passed
the owner. In other words, the engine and all parts are probably good. Of
course, being an '85, it was so old it wasn't worth anything, and was sold
to the junkz. Pull the carb off, verify proper sizes, install on yours.
Might cost you $20 or so, plus yard admission which varies from $1 to $5
in my area. I'm guessing on the carb price, but it varies with each yard.
As for autozone, the only thing I buy from them is AAMCO tranny fluid, and
the only reason I use AAMCO is because it's what was available here until
Discount/Advance quit carrying it, and so it's what was put in my tranny.
I should have switched when I rebuilt the tranny (which it really didn't
need, we found out), but I had no clue Discount was changing stock.
My dad swears by NAPA. I have yet to have an experience with them that
justifies the price, and the engine rebuilt kit they sold me had Victor
gaskets in it. The intake gasket failed on me about 6,000 miles later. I
replaced it with a FelPro I got from Discount, and I now have close to
17,000 miles on the engine with no major problems.
