For the second straight month the sleepy greedy morons at GM and Ford,
who make no vehicles that Americans want to buy, have done less
terrible than the energetic innovative geniuses at Toyota and Honda.
The record for December 2008 (vs. December 2002):

-31%--GM
-32%--Ford
-35%--Honda (-35% is also the industry average)

The linked story also cites the usual unnamed "analysts" for the
prediction that the 16 million/year vehicle sales we have been
enjoying during the dark days of Bush 43 are gone at least until 2012,
at which point they predict sales of 15 million/year. (The number for
2008 was 13.2 million.) My favorite quote:

"'After an era of excess indulgence, we�re now entering a prolonged
period of conservation,' said John A. Casesa of the consulting firm
Casesa Shapiro Group. 'Trading in a car every three years is a luxury
that the average American can no longer afford.'�

("The average American" has been trading in for a new car every three
years? I had not heard that. This John the Analyst must have a level
of insider knowledge and insight the rest of us can never hope to
achieve.)

Anyhow, here's a big big thank you to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and
President O! for delivering us from the soul-sucking tyranny of
materialism and prosperity we enjoyed from 2002 through 2007. I can't
wait to see what they've got on the drawing board for the All New All
Green GM and Chrysler lineups for 2010.

Service schedule for 100,000+ miles

My 2002 (Dodge) GC ES with 3.8L has just passed 110,000 miles.
Does anyone have a maintenance guideline/schedule that should be
followed with the higher miles on the engine/tranny?

For the 3.8L engine, what is the recommended time to replace the timing
belt/chain? If the engine has not been stressed, what would be a safe delay
in replacing it? what other work should be rolled into the timing belt
replacement?

Any other tips for keeping this thing going another couple years?

I keep thinking it's likely that a lot of folks will be pulling their
cars from this years Barrett-Jackson due to the economic climate. So it
seems odd to me that this car would come to *public* auction at this
time. Even so, I'm guessing this thing will sell for serious money.

TOKYO � Toyota is suspending production at all 12 of its Japan plants
for 11 days over February and March, a stoppage of unprecedented scale
for the nation's top automaker as it grapples with shrinking global demand.

The last time Toyota Motor Corp. halted production at all its Japan
plants was in August 1993, when demand plunged because of a rising yen,
and that was for only one day, according to the company.

A global economic downturn has hammered the auto industry in Japan and
elsewhere, forcing carmakers to cut staff, lower production and delay
new models. Major automakers in the U.S. had teetered on the brink of
collapse until securing a multibillion dollar government lifeline.

"We are coping with a slump in global sales," Toyota spokesman Hideaki
Homma said Tuesday. "Demand in the world auto market is so depressed
that every model is falling sharply in sales."

Toyota said last year that it was stopping production at its 12 domestic
plants for three days in January. But it decided on additional closures
because of the global downturn. Toyota will stop output for six days in
February and five days in March, it said.

Of Toyota's domestic factories, four produce vehicles while the rest
make engines and auto parts.

Overnight, Toyota reported that its U.S. sales in December were down 37
percent on year, a worse drop than Ford Motor Co.'s 32 percent drop and
General Motor's 31 percent slide.

Toyota last year suspended production at its auto plants in Alabama,
Indiana and Texas for three months, and shut down output for two days in
December at all its North American vehicle factories including five in
the United States, one in Canada and another in Mexico.

Chrysler LLC also shut down its plants for a month in December, longer
than the usual two-week break, while GM has said it would shut down a
plant in Thailand for up to two months.

Toyota is also struggling in its home market, which has been stagnant
for years. The sales drop has worsened amid a global recession.

Sales of new vehicles in Japan fell to 3.2 million vehicles last year,
the lowest in 34 years, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said
Monday.

Last month, Toyota said it was slipping into its first operating loss in
70 years, expecting 150 billion yen ($1.66 billion ) of operating losses
for the fiscal year ending March 2009.

Toyota, which makes the Prius gas-electric hybrid and Camry sedan,
expects 50 billion yen ($555 million) in net profit, down from 1.7
trillion yen earned the previous year.

02 Explorer - transmission replacement choice

'02 Explorer with 62k miles needs a new transmission. Extended
warranty company will pay for a rebuilt and give a 12 mo/12k mile
warranty. Or the warranty company will give me the $ toward a new
transmission from Ford (carries a 36 mo / 75k mile warranty.) The
cost of the new transmission vs the rebuilt is $1000 extra.

Any advice? Should I pay the $1000 out of pocket for the Ford
transmission and the Ford guarantee? The extended warranty company
(though CarMax) has been vague about where their rebuilt will come
from. Ford also guarantees that any transmission issues identified in
service bulletins will be addressed in their transmission. I plan to
keep the Explorer as long as I possible can.

I've changed my mind about 6 time so far... can you help me make a
final decision?
