What's the "Straight Dope"? by A VFW[_2_]
Dear Cecil: I have a theory that, as a nation, we could save about 10 per cent of our gasoline consumption by the simple expedient of making sure our tires are fully inflated. My questions a (1) What is the relationship between underinflation and gas mileage deterioration (e.g., 20 percent...

Hi-Beams Not Working on ’73 Beetle - Help Please! by Jim Ed
Sometimes when I switch the headlights to hi - beams, I get no headlights at all. Then a few seconds later, they come on. Is this from lack of use of the hi-beams, or possibly due to dampness in the trunk area after a rain storm? Rain water could have dripped onto the headlight relay. I hardly...

Dammit by [email protected][_1_]
The damn bug broke down on me again today. It started with a whirring noise at idle, which fortunately I was at a place where I could stop the car. I opened the hood..and I have smoke from the alternator. After I burned a finger on the pulley nut I left it alone so it would get it cooled off....

Spark Plug Q's by Mel P.[_2_]
I changed my plug due to failing emissions and noticed a few things. The gaps were to much, about .010 too big. I know that will affect emissions. Another thing I found was that the plugs were not tight. They weren't rattling but I could remove them by hand with a socket, no wrench/handle...

Reconnecting EGR by Mel P.[_2_]
Since I failed emissions, I'm reinstalled the EGR system I removed a few years ago, which is probably the main cause of my emissions problems. ON the FI rubber elbow there's a metal tube and rubber hose combo. What hose gets connected to it? Also, any site with photos of the entire...

Latest pasture find - old dune buggy by Randy
Spotted an old dune buggy the other day. Not sure when it got placed in the pasture but it was fairly recent. Looked like 1 from the 60's and looked like it was pretty decent and complete. Had CA plates on it. I'll have to see if I can track down who owns it or the land and get the scoop on...

77 FI Bug stalls... by Mel P.[_2_]
Drove my 77 Bug on Friday to work, no problems. Drove home in the afternoon on highway for 15 mins, no problem. Stopped for lunch. Drove 10 minutes to a store, 10 minutes later it didn't want to start. Seemed like a fuel problem. About a 1/2 hour of fiddling, checking vac hose, connections...

remove upper stater bolt by joemamy
Hi All - replacing my starter on a 95 Jetta 2.0 and I'm too lame to figure out how to remove the upper bolt. It seems I have to remove the wire harness first. I can see where there should be something to remove under the harness but there appear to be no bolt there. Thx!!!

Ice Storm Causes Near Miss for Beetle/ How Do I Get Ice Off Windows? by Jim Ed
We had an ice storm here and a great big tree limb broke off and fell right behind my classic Beetle. Although some of the smaller limbs fell onto Beetle, they did no harm. The ice that was already on it prevented any scratches. I am getting away unscathed. Next time, I will park on the other...

Oil Breather hookup by Mel P.[_2_]
This post is a follow up my Reconnecting EGR post for Jan 25th. I think the oil breather tube/hose gets connected to the back of the rubber elbow. MY question is: Will it affect my emissions? I've had it disconnected for a few years when I removed the EGR. I had a little oil breather filter...

Well I have to part with my project. For sale: both Beetles, one to restore the other for parts. I have...
