How is 1.6L diesel with an AT? by
Ed
I'd like to get some opinions on having a 1.6L NA diesel coupled with an
automatic transmission, specifically, in a Rabbit. I've had two different
Rabbit diesels, both with a 4-speed manual transmission. I would imagine
that, even though the gear ratios would be different in an automatic than...

Rubber seals for Cabriolet vent windows by
Papa
The vent window rubber seals for my 1988 VW Cabriolet Convertible are all
dried out and coming apart. Anyone know where I can find replacement seals?
By the way, my vent windows swivel. They are not the fixed (non-opening)
type.
Thanks.

Alternator light stays on by
Lamprey
Hello.
I'm still not totally confident in my skills as a mechanic, so I'd like
to run something by you all just to confirm that I'm either on the right
track or completely wrong.
My car is a 92 Jetta, 1.8 gas w/AC. Around 230,000 km, and still
treating me right...most of the time.
Today, out of...

Letter to my 1993 fox by
Me
Dear Fox,
Once again you are happily back home. Of course "home" to you is a
repair shop. You just spend your off days with me. That was really
cute how your timing belt went while I was on my way to see my
daughter. And it is compounded by the fact that it happened less than
50 miles after your...

Gear Growl 86 Vanagon by
Jim Corey
My 86 Vanagon has developed a whine, or growl. Related to speed (not engine
rpm). Happens under power i.e. makes the noise, but if I back off on
accelerator, or put in clutch, noise disappears. Noise sounds faster as I
drive faster. Checked oil in transaxle. OK. I thought CV joints went
"clunk"...

Vanagon problems by
[email protected]
Hello,
I recently bought a 1986 vanagon and found that I will need to replace
the engine within the next 6 months since one of the lifters is not
working properly.
In the mean time I experienced a sudden loss of power when driving on
the freeway. I was driving at 65 mph and all in a sudden I went...

Engine overheating and No heat inside the car? by
[email protected]
I drive a '00 Jetta.
On my drive home from work one cold February night, I looked at the
dash to learn the coolant was overheating. Many people would think the
temperature gauge translates to the engine overheating, but that's not
neccessarily the case. I cranked the heat inside the car to...

I am having a no start problem with my 97 VW Jetta. I just replaced the
distributor and was timing the car, when I turned the distributor too
far and stalled it. I then moved the distributor back to its original
position and tried to start the car again. Engine would turn but no
spark. Coil pack is...

Chirping noise from front brakes/2000 Golf by
John
2 months ago I posted about a oud chirping noise that happened occasionally
on my 2000 Golf. It stopped when I touched the brake, turned hard, or
backed up; but then started up again; until it simply went away until next
time.
Since then it has happened maybe twice, for about 3 or 4 minutes each...

Jetta: 1999 GL TDI versus 2000 GLS (buying) by
Cymen Vig
I'm trying to decide between a 1999 Jetta GL TDI and a 2000 Jetta GLS.
Both cars are close to the same price (slightly under $8k).
2000 GLS:
pros: 1 owner, very clean, ~60k miles
cons: needs large scrape in paint job repaired and less fuel efficient
(scrape repair estimate included in...
