156 - Any accessory power available.... by
Alan Rogers
....in the radio area.
Last time I had a look at replacing the radio I couldn't find any convenient
accessory 12v power. Seems to me there's only ignition or permanent 12v.
Permanent is obviously needed to retain the memory but ideally I'd like
accessory power for the radio.
At present it...

156 - bubbles in coolant bottle by
Steve Collins
Hi,
I've just noticed that when revving the engine on my 156 2.0TS, bubbles
appear in the coolant filler bottle.
My suspicion is that this means the head gasket has failed but the car has
no other symtoms of this - it doesn't seem to be getting oil into the water
or water into the oil...

156 - quirky electrics by
Dave Savage
The left-hand speakers on my radio cut out from time to time.
Please don't laugh at the next bit (it's an Alfa after all) - if I
open/close one of the electric windows, the speakers cut back in again !!!
Any ideas where I should be looking for the fault ?

156 - screeching starter motor? by
fmt
My 2.0 TS has started giving a high pitched screeching noise whenever
I start it...more so from cold, but can be at anytime.
The car always fires up first time, but just as it does so, a screech,
lasting about 1 second, comes from the engine bay.
Any ideas? Is it serious? I bought the car with a...

156 - Stalls soon after starting by
Steve
Hi
I just wondered if someone could shed any light onna problem which my 156
has started to show.
Soon after starting, the idle becomes very erratic, jumping up and down +500
revs. Frequently, the revs drop to zero, the stall lights briefly show,
before the engine wakes up and sorts itself out....

156 - Strong petrol smell after filling up by
MG
I know that Alfas are meant to be for petrol-heads but...
Now that the good weather has arrived I like to get the sunroof open.
However, for the first 50 miles or so after filling up this means
putting uip with a very strong smell of petrol. It seems to be worse
when I've been chucking it round...

156 - Variator by
savamac
OK - the dreaded "diesel rattle at startup" is back.
Question - can the variator be replaced without doing cambelt etc. at
the same time (I had cambelt done 12000 miles / 32 months ago) ?

156 - Windscreen wiper problem by
Dave Savage
My 156 (1998, 55k miles on the clock) has developed an intermittent problem
with the wipers. In summary, the wipers refuse to work (sometimes !!) -
either they won't sweep at all, or only very sluggishly. Up to now, I've
managed to get them going by switching wipers on/off a few times.
Is this a...

156 1.8 36,000 service question by
Joe Fox
Hi folks,
Just been on to my dealer again concerning a problem I have with my 2000
1.8 TS 156.
The workshop manual says that the spark plugs should be inspected at 36,000
miles and replaced at 60,000.
Now my dealer says that inspection involves a visual inspection which
consists of taking the...

156 1.8 rough running problems by
Joe Fox
Hi folks,
My 2000 1.8 156 had been sitting for 6 months with no driving (smashed up
leg so couldnt drive).
I've been driving it again in the last week and noticed what sounded like a
small blowing noise from under the top cover (silver plastic thing),
I put it down to a loose gasket and was about...

156 1.8 TS CF3 Engine - Exhaust Manifold help needed by
Alan Rogers
Hi All
At the last service I asked my man to sort out the manifold heatsheild,
'twas rattling. He had to remove the shield and weld a bracket back on,
when I picked it up he advised that 2 of the 3 manfold bolts were sheared -
brilliant!
However, having a look I'm not so sure. Here's how to...

156 1.8 TS COLD START by
GFitega
It's -15 deg C outside.
When I start it in the morning it chokes a while if I press the gas pedal,
like the machine is going to stop.
It doesn't, just drops rpm almost to zero.
After a few minutes it's ok.
What could that be?

156 1.8TS Overheating by
Gareth Hill
I've recently started having problems with my 156 1.8TS overheating.
I generally use a local mechanic who I trust and can afford rather than
the local Alfa dealership, but we are struggling to find the cause for
the problem. I'm not a mechanic but am hoping we can find a solution
without resorting...

Makollig Jazvahted
Typically in the morning, or even if it's been parked for just a couple of
hours sometimes, start the car and there a pretty awful, screech, squeal..
call it what you will from the starter motor.
Googling suggests that it's clutch dust csuung the starter to stick on the
flywheel, although I'm...
