78mm crank? by
Anthony W
any recommendations on where to get a good 78mm crank. The one at
Aircooled.net is rather expensive and I'm not yet convinced that I need
to spend that much.

Does this make any sense? ? ? by
rdoc
Please follow this one for a bit:
Again... working on a newly acquired chopped down Beetle Dune Buggy. Not a
pro job... obviously some guys in a backyard did it.
It's a 70 chassis with a 69 Solex 30 PICT 2 carb on a 1600 74 motor.
I previously posted that it runs a little sluggish and then the...

trunk space in older beetle by
Ben Boyle
These convertibles are actually just the roofs hacked off normal ones.
Assuming you are talking normal suitcases they'll probably fit. But keep in mind that Beetle trunks don't have locks,
just a release in the glovebox and I'm sure everybody in Mexico knows that.
Where are you going? I reserved a...

Assembly Soon to Begin by
TerryB
I got my heads from the shop yesterday, man they look good. Went ahead
and got the other parts I need to build the long block.
P/C set 85.5's
Rebuilt Rods and bearings
Push rod tubes
Not a real big list, but dropped some coin to say the least.
I brought the heads in the house and CC'd them last...

Yet another case ID question by
Animal
I have read the Haynes manual, read Muir's book, cracked the case and
cleaned it and still can not figure out what engine I have inherited. (I
cracked the case because when I drained the oil, water poured out.)
The only identifying marks are a "014" stamped on the flywheel-side of
the case (on the...

Tired of mechanics and the run around... by
71-transporter
I am venting ... I do most of my own work but occasionally if I am too
busy I bring it in for a professional look over and/or major work.
Once we had the valves gapped and timing adjusted and the car was
overheating terribly when it came back. I had to readjust the timing
myself.
Another time I...

Type I Clutch Cable by
Doug
I have a 1967 Type I Beetle with a stock diaphragm clutch. The clutch
cable breaks every couple of years. It always breaks at one of the ends
where the cable is crimped into the fitting. It never breaks anywhere in
between. I always grease the cable upon installation. Is this common to
break this...

Modifying a VW for the postapokalyptic future .... by
Robin-Louis Clevis
You know, 2006 is near, the nuclear war with Iran is only a few months
ahead.
After that, the Earth will be a desert, radioactive and most parts
uninhabitable.
So how can I modify my VW so that I can still use it in the desert
world of tomorrow ? You know, some Mad Max "The Road Warrior" -...

Rearview mirror by
bug '59
Hello Ramva,
A buddy of mine gave me his spare rearview mirror.
It's the one which you can 'click' away with a knop at the bottom.
My guess is it's from a mexi beetle since he owned one.
The question here is how to replace the stock one ('73 std) with this one?
(if possible)
There are no visable...

Hesitant 1972 Bay by
Gareth Edwards
Recently started having this problem with my Bay 1600cc. It is very
hesitant at low revs, and even if I put my foot down or pump the throttle a
bit too get some fuel in there, it still takes a little while to pick up.
Once the revs pick up it pulls strongly. It needed a service anyway so I...

Spike
Hi all,
Quick question....
If you can smell petrol/gas is it at a combustible level?
I have a very faint smell of it when I open the bonnet in my 68 Type1.
Cheers

just letting you all know I have moved and arrived in ¤%#( Virginia
reasonably safe and sound. If you have a monitor on your computer that
can display things smaller than a wart on a gnat's ass, then you can
look up Linden, Virginia, zip code 22642 on your map.
