I will be going on a small trip for me but a seemingly long trip for my VW. It has a single port 1600, appearing to be all stock. I have aftermarket chrome half moons but the tires are just a little wider than stock. I also don't have a tach and other than me, I will have about 100 lbs of...

"new" starter grinding by Mel P.[_2_]
I replaced my starter with a 'new' rebuilt one... When I turn the ignition, there's a grinding noise momentarily and then it starts. I removed it to check the flywheel gears and the starter gear look fine, no shavings. Is it possible the starter is bad? What else should I check? tia,

Midnight Repairs by David Gravereaux
He came down the back drive just before midnight on Christmas Eve. I was out in the shop, about to call it a night when I heard the unmistakable sound of a Volkswagen running on three cylinders. Bad valve. It was an early model high-roof delivery van. Bright red with white trim. He pulled up...

New Fuel Line? by Lee
I'm replacing things like brake and fuel system components on a 72 standard that isn't in too bad of shape, but has been sitting in a barn for 25 years. I just want nice new critical parts. I can't find anyone selling the fuel line that goes from the front of the car, back through the tunnel...

Painting a VW, please help a naive person: by Mike
For sometime now, I have been tempted to rattle can my VW. I do not have a compressor, but I have the desire to get a good, but cheap paint job complete. Any ways, I was wondering if anyone could walk me through the paces on painting a car? I imagine it goes something like this: sand the paint...

Type I Clutch Cable by Doug
I have a 1967 Type I Beetle with a stock diaphragm clutch. The clutch cable breaks every couple of years. It always breaks at one of the ends where the cable is crimped into the fitting. It never breaks anywhere in between. I always grease the cable upon installation. Is this common to break this...

generator q. by A Veteran
What usually goes when a generator burns out. I mean if its not the brushes or the regulator, what part the windings or the commutator that is the culprit? what are the odds. -- when you believe the only tool you have is a hammer. All problems look like nails.

I inheritied a beautiful 1973 Thing from my dad. He bought it new and kept all the papers. It still has the original top on it. I use it as my daily driver and while out today it became very difficult to shift. When I try to start the car in neutral I can not shift into any gear. If I try to...
