Are there any current <g> or past racing games or sims that will work on Win 7 64-Bit?

Looky here! A new post in RAS <g>

Besides Andrew of course ;-)

Does any one know of any racing games or sims that will work on
Windows 7 64-bit in an acceptable resolution? Something higher than
say 1024x768. Heck, I'd even take a racing "game" for that matter
these days. Preferably a NASCAR sim but I love all racing.

My main monitor is capable of 1920x1080 but I realize I'm stretching
it.

I should give someone else a chance to speak up first. But now I don't have the
iRacing forums to distract me, my caravan is parked firmly in the r.a.s. car park.
Only an eviction order (or a 3 month for $10 iRacing offer) will get me out of
here.

I've run NKPro, Dirt2, GTR Evo, Nascar2003, GTR2, LFS, and RBR under Win7 64. I
seem to remember having to jump through some hoops for RBR (or was that for three
screens?), but the others worked perfectly at any resolution D3D can detect.

Only GTL proved to be a crash-fest. I think there's a fix but I gave up.

GPL is my main annoyance. I can run it ok but it's sounded terrible on my last two
upgrades. Again I'm sure if I persevered I could solve that as well (perhaps with
an add-in soundcard), but there's always something shinier to distract me.

I installed Win7 64 as a test initially and had no problems whatsoever that I could
detect, so stuck with it. It sounds like there's something strange going on with
your system, but I'm clueless as to what.

I couldn't get RBR to run. I will see if I can do so with NASCAR
2003, and GTR2 (but what is the maximum resolution for those two?). I
will boot up Race 07 and see how that is. DIRT 2 works.

Something strange going on with my system? What do you mean by that?!

Any D3D resolution available. I run at 5040x1050

From your post I thought you'd tried some and were limited to low resolutions.

What kind of monitor is that?

Thanks

It's 3 x 1680x1050. They're only cheap 20" screens which cost me about the same as
one good quality 24". Once you've experienced three screens there's no going back.

Okay, I have a 27 inch Samsung and a 22 inch Samsung installed with
another 22 inch not hooked up because it was getting a little flaky.
Just one video card, a eVGA GTX 480 1536MB.

Dang, I asked my wife for an XBox 360 for my Bday (yeah, right, like
she's going to buy me a "game player" but I never know!). If I knew
GT5 was that impressive I guess I might have asked for a PS3. Price
point seemed better for a Playstation than the XBox since we can only
afford the 4GB XBox now (I would/will eventually get an external HD
for it).

Now, to the basement to see if I can find NASCAR 3 or NASCAR Sim
Racing and get it up and running on my Win7-64 system. Hopefully in a
week or two. Especially after today's Daytona race!!!

I must emphasise that it's the Nordschleife experience which makes GT5 superb (for
me). The rest is entertaining in a more game-like way, but nowhere near as
satisfying. It's almost as if the Nordschleife was worked on by a different team...
or at least someone who loves that track and driving there.

Having said that, I seem to have managed to do most of the GT5 tests and races now.
So the main gameplay must have some kind of addictive charm, and enough sim
qualities to stop it being deadly dull. But I would still be reluctant to recommend
the PS3 to anyone without a Nordschleife (or Little Big Planet) addiction.

I'd also never have bought a PS3 if I didn't have a G25 wheel which is supported.
That's why I've never been tempted by Forza on the Xbox... I can't/won't drive with
a controller and Microsoft are stupid about compatibility.

You will also be pleased to hear that my rational brain has taken over and
suppressed the idea of getting another couple of PS3s for peripheral vision. It
will remain a dream rather than a goal.

Probably. ;-)

I'm guessing we're talking about iRacing? I gather from various places that iRacing
are still almost as good at putting on big special events as their members are of
competing in them safely. ;-)

I shouldn't poke fun, but there is a rather depressing predictability to the gap
between iRacing's aspirations and harsh reality.

Still, they seem to have pulled a *lot* more new accounts in this week. That's got
to be good for the marketing team to work with, and fresh blood is always needed to
supply iRating for the top tiers to feed on. :-)

My GTX 260 used to drive three screens remarkably well (via a TripleHead box, which
is no longer cost effective... it's cheaper to buy a new ATI card). If you had a
second PCI-E slot you might be able to pick up a cheap second card for Soft-TH
(lots of topics about this on the iRacing forums if I remember correctly). But with
a 27" main screen the mismatch in sizes might be a bit too disorientating. An inch
or two would be tolerable, but that's a big gap.

It is, as I say, a superbly immersive step, but I've never used a big single
monitor and it may well be that this makes up for it quite a lot. You can, after
all, use a wider FOV before the view starts to look "wrong".

Andrew McP

PS I've just remembered you can run iRacing in a window if you have a two screen
desktop, and at least have peripheral vision on one side.
