BUENA PARK – A Fountain Valley man will be arrested after losing control
of his van Thursday afternoon, running over one teenager and trapping
another underneath his vehicle, police said.

Gilbert Armando Gonzales, 53, was driving southbound on Beach Boulevard at
the I-5 overpass about 3:45 p.m. when authorities believe he may have
suffered a seizure, losing control of his 2003 Chevy Astro van, Buena Park
police Sgt. William Kohanek said.

The vehicle went onto the sidewalk near Auto Center Drive, striking two
15-year-old boys walking home from Buena Park High School, Kohanek said.
The boy who had been run over was treated at the scene and then taken to
UCI Medical Center in Orange, Kohanek said.

It took firefighters about half an hour to free the other teen, as they
used rescue airbags to lift the van off the ground, Orange County Fire
Authority Capt. Greg McKeown said.

A helicopter landed on Beach Boulevard to transport the boy to UCI Medical
Center.

The two teens are in critical condition, Kohanek said. They were
reportedly both able to speak to rescuers at the scene.

Police say Gonzales was taken to an emergency room for the possible
seizure.

Once he is released from the hospital, investigators expect to arrest
Gonzales on suspicion of driving under the influence, Kohanek said.
