Ok, so I bought a new cylinder, installed it, and everything is fine now.
Total cost with Steering wheel puller and lock plate release tool and new
cylinder...about $100. My guess is that's a whole lot better than dropping
it off at the Jeep dealer. Thanks for everyone's help.

Does that mean that "The Girl" guessed it right - first?

Glad you got it fixed!

Be careful of that "lube" - it's easy to gum up the works. The one I like
best is a suspension of graphite in a very light oil/solvent sold as
speedometer cable lubs. A bit messy if you get carried away but it cleans
the pins and such and is not affected by cold temps.

Not sure about the poster's, but the one I fixed(that I fully expected to be
the pot metal rack when I started the job)ended up being the tumblers. The
lock cyl wouldn't even turn after I got it out of the column. The key
didn't look all that worn, either.

Kate,
yes, you got it right. In fact if I had only listened to you in the first
place, it would have saved me the trouble of taking off the ignition switch
too no avail. Of course, the good news is if anything else goes wrong along
the column, I now know how to take the thing apart.

I dunno if I'd go THAT far, but it always good to get as many opinions as
you can before you tear into unfamiliar territory.
There are so many things that can go wrong that it's always a good idea to
have as much information as you can before you start tearing stuff apart.

The only reason I thought of it is my own past experience, with of all
things,
my ex the repo man (he popped a lot of locks and could even get an old one
to go without popping it if he held his mouth right)
and my old Chevys. Had more than one of them do the same thing and it was
always the same problem. The little cast housing was either kaput or
something had sprung sideways inside.

I'll bet you're tickled now that you learned all about it though!

K.
