Like Matt said, clean the TPS connectors http://revbeergoggles.com/tb/tb.html Also clean the throttle body idle air passage. Holding your foot down on a fuel injected vehicle is not the same as a carb. A foot-down start tells the computer something is wrong with the sensor circuit and puts the computer into a limp mode while it tries to start the engine. Since it isn't keeping on running there is something wrong and should be a trouble code set. Pull the codes. http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm ignition on-off-on-off-on then record what comes up on the odometer. Yours should send codes there. -- DougW |

I would be checking the wire mesh strap from the head to the firewall on it also. The electrical plug is usually all you need to clean on the TPS.

Before you spray the contacts, put some paper towel around and use a bit of cardboard to keep any of the contact cleaner off of the paint. Contact cleaner is very good paint remover. It's also a very good idea to wear eye protection. Disconnect the plug, spray the contacts, work them a bit with a toothpick, spray again, let dry, then put a bit of dilectric grease (sparkplug grease) in the socket and on the gasket. Then reassemble. If your moderatly skilled with electronics and have a digital volt meter you can test the TPS sensor. There are three leads. one is ground, one is voltage, and the other varies as you move the throttle body. Basically: Turn the ignition on but do not start the jeep. back-probe the connector and find the ground and +5v (should be the outside two wires) If there isn't 5v there then you might have a break in the harness or just not a good contact with the wire. Now measure the center wire against the ground. Throttle butterfly Voltage CLOSED >200 mV OPEN <4.8 V The transition between full open and closed should be smooth with no jumps or dropouts. -- DougW |
