Default How to replace instrument lamps?

I have a 1978 bug cabriolet. What is the proper way to get at the
instruments in order to replace lamps? There is a steel panel in the
front luggage compartment behind the dash but it is not only held in
with screws but with a strong sealant of some sort. Seems quite
different from my old 1956 bug.

AFAIK
Don't you just pull out the Speedo and then change the bulbs?
The Speedo should just pull out since it is held by a rubber sleeve that
fits around its outer diameter.
I use a hooked tool to start to pull it out.

In your case you might have to disconnect your speedo cable and I am not
sure if you have an EGR timer box in the front trunk of the vehicle where
the speedo cables connect at.

You dont need to pull out the speedo to take out the lights. Many cables
connect to your speedo, most of them connect to a light bulb suport, just
pull those, and there is your ligh.
