Default E36 Heated Mirrors

Hi,
as the weather here in England is geting colder and wetter i have noticed a
problem with the heated mirrors.
The left hand mirror is permanently on and the drivers mirror doesnt work at
all, i gather they should work off the heated rear window button. Any body
any ideas ?

Thanks

No, they are on all the time regardless of any interior switches.

AFAIA, the mirror heaters come on with the ignition, regardless of weather
conditions.
Possibly a bad connection or the heater element has gone.

Is this an easy job to remove the mirror to check the element?, removing the
glass looks a bit hard wouldnt wont to break it.

Which they have on both my cars. Don't think they ever worked on my E39,
bought secondhand.

I think you need to tilt the mirror upwards as far as possible, and then by
inserting a thin lever between the mirror and the housing, the miirror is
unclipped from the motor tilt mechanism.
You don't actually lever on the mirror itself, but on the mounting stuck on
the back of the mirror.

I suggest you warm the inside of the mirror with a hairdryer if it's at all
cold. It's all plastic inside, and warming, allows the clips to pop apart
easier, giving less chance of breakage.
The plastic used can be quite brittle when cold.

Not as complicated as it sounds. Ease the mirror out slightly so you can see
behind it. Use a torch if it helps and you'll see where the lever needs to
go.
Mike.

Your brain is running slow, or you're living up to your name.
Yvette is in the UK.

It's not hard, you just have to know exactly how to do it. On mine there was
a simple white plastic tab that you had to slide from one side to the other
to release the mirror.
