intermittent "Service Engine Soon" light

Hey again everyone,
I drive a 1987 coupe. Recently about one in five times that I start the car
the "Service engine soon" light comes on. What's the best way to diagnose
it? I brought it to my friend's house (he has a diagonstic tool) and when I
got there, the light wasn't on anymore. Troubleshooting advice? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

What is the best way to diagnose trouble codes? Have your friend read
the trouble codes with his "diagnostic tool" or you could just use a
paper clip. GM thought of the problem of intermittents and solved it
with memory. Any codes that would turn on the light are stored until
cleared by disconnecting the battery.
