I thought they were nice compact Luxury-Personal cars.

As you say, purists did not approve.

Who was the body builder? Bertone?

Mechanically it wasn't much to brag about. FWD with a little turbo'd SOHC
4-banger with only 160 HP. The wheels sucked.

I think the main problem was the cost when compared to the similarly styled
Detroit Chrysler. This one had nice leather, much like the Volvo coupes
that had the Bertone treatment but was this car really worth its asking
price? I think most people decided to pass. It just wasn't distinctive
enough.

My recollection is more like 35,000 which would be roughly comparable to the
current T-bird after adjusting for inflation. Sales look roughly
comparable--from what I've seen on the street--and neither was/is a volume
seller.

The 1987 styling change of the 2 door LeBaron also gave it an appearance
vaguely similar to the TC at around half the price. IMHO, the similarity of
appearance was very vague.

Hughes has never been big on facts Peter. Just check his other 26,000 posts
since 2002. If he can't find it on Google he just makes it up as he goes
along. That's why his posts are so disjointed.
But oh how he loves the attention it gets him.
