Also, while the coil was a major fiasco and poorly handled at first by VW,
it doesn't at all make the engine bad.

If a spark plug went bad, would someone say that the engine is poorly
designed or made? I think not.

The 1.8t has been on trade magazine "Ward's Auto World's" list of 10
best engines on at least one occasion, in the company with BMW's sixes
and other very good engines. Ward's liked its broad power band and
minimal turbo lag. While the 1.8t has had the resolved-under-warranty
coil problems and can sludge up if the oil isn't changed when
recommended, it is far from VW's worst engine ever and is, in fact, a
very good engine. If you were to single out VW's worst engine ever, it
would probably be the air-cooled engine that created VW. This, of
course, is not because it was a bad engine for its time, but because
time marches on.

Whether it pertains to the engine or not, that list is easily dwarfed
by TSB lists of other makes of same year.

The current 2.0L is pretty useless as far as engines go... It has decent low
end grunt, but the TDI's have way more (and the diesels don't use any oil...
at least mine doesn't with 108K Kms on the clock)... There is some power in
the midrange, and almost none in the higher revs.... The 2.0L's seem to all
drink oil and they aren't the greatest engines for fuel consumption.

No, I'd say it makes for GREAT donor material when transplanted into an
early chassis.

Keep lining up those motor mount holes VW.

TBerk
