Default "valve" or "button" in diesel fuel filler tube?

Was putting fuel in and admiring another (newer) VW diesel, and buddy tells
me that if he pushes a littlle button on the inside of the filler tube he
can get another two gallons in.

Mine has that button too; I looked.

What is it supposed to be for - and is it safe to put the extra fuel in?

Found it (google) - is vent for the expansion area.

Suppose it's safe to fill as long as I'm hitting the road right away.

Yes, I do the same thing. Its the air chamber for expansion due to
temperature. I fill it all the time by leaving the nozzle tip holding it
down. I drive at least 100 miles and the gas gauge don't move. I had the
specs once its not quite 2 gallons . its 1. something. I never had a problem
doing it. I suspect if the car gets hot, and its full it will pressurize
the tank. Or blow out a hose or something.

Not a good thing to do because it puts liquid fuel only where vapors should
be.

No it doesn't , You're putting fuel where fuel is supposed to be. When you
put the gas cap back on the vent valve opens and the fuel runs in anyway.
The switch shuts off the vent tank when you take the gas cap of. So there's
a space if you fill it up. If the car gets hot sitting in the sun, the fuel
wont expand and do damage. However if you're hitting the road. Or leaving
the car overnight in cooler temperatures. Or driving an hour there will be
no harm. The problem would be to fill up, and leave the car in the sun all
day. However if you know the intricacies of this trick, and are stupid
enough to use it and park it in the sun all day. you get what you deserve.

Don't worry even if it is hot out. Diesel doesn't expand like gas does and
these are also in gas VWs. Many of us with diesel VWs just remove the
button so we don't have to hold it in filling. Called "venting."

I like your thinking, but doesn't the button pushed hold the vent open. If
its gone ,Is the vent not open. ?

If the button is removed you are also removing the part that closes the
vent. Therefore, the vent is open all the time. Much easier than pushing
in the button while fueling.
