looking to ID 1100 engine
Have an old 1100 (?) engine I was looking to find the vintage and
specs for. It has the fuel pump side mounted and generator stand cast into case. The number stamped near the generator is 1-1,133,298 I found this resource http://www.thebugshop.org/bsrbyrs.htm which tells me it could be a 1947 25 hp, but my # is slightly larger than the max engine number listed for 1947. It appears starting in 1948 the engine numbering pattern changed and no longer starts with the 1- like mine does. If I ignore the 1- in my number, the serial 1,133,298 puts it as a 1955 36 hp. Any ideas? |

I'm looking at Bob Wilson's 1949-1959 VW Beetle book, an authoritative source. The last engine number in 1948 was 122,649. Your number 1,133,298 places it during the month of February 1956. (The last engine # in February was 1,344,312.) Speedy Jim http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/ |

From the above resource, it shows all engines 1947 and prior had the 1-, numbers after 1948 did not have the 1-. Is it understood that you just drop the 1- and assume it is a later engine/number? Is there any other way (besides measuring bore/stroke) to tell if it's a 1100 vs. a 1200? 1947 (1 Jan 47 - 31 Dec 47) Engine: 1-090,733 - 1-0100,788 1948 (1 Jan 48 to 31 Dec 48) Engine: 100,789 - 122,649 |

Also note that the -56 engine is a 30ps engine, only referred to as a 36hp (SAE) in the U.S. J. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/ |
