i was a little skeptical at first but ive yet to ever hear of a single
failure from the chinese built mile marker electric winch. that said,
explore the hydraulic lineup before making a purchase. US made, US
military tested and proven, and still cheaper than the premium electric
winches. theyre a little intimidating at first, but they really arent
difficult to install. i installed a 10,500lb. mile marker hydraulic
winch on my '03 rubicon http://tinyurl.com/5x5fg (dial-up users beware)
that ill be putting on my next rubicon (or gladiator if they come to
market this year), and a 12,000lb. mile marker hydraulic winch on my
'04.5 dodge cummins 4x4. electric winches served me very well in the
past and i have nothing against them, but since going hydraulic ill
never go back to electric. you can never appreciate the difference
more than when you need a winch the most.

note i stated "reserve equipment". what youre seeing is equipment
purchased before the military standardized the hydraulic winch. youll
probably see them for many years on support vehicles....no point in
throwing out a perfectly good winch. you wont see them on combat
vehicles.

NO I'm not seeing stuff that was purchased before Milemarker won that
deal, this stuff is not that old. You have no idea what I personally
have seen, you aren't here. This isn't old Reserve equipment I'm seeing
it on.

mile marker has been the exclusive winch provider to the US military
for about 2 years. a 2 year old winch left over from before the
hydraulic standard was set would not be "old".

.....and mile marker didnt "win" any deal. they _earned_ their
exclusivity by building the most rugged winch available that proved
itself to the harshest criticism anywhere.

<sigh>....i should have known better than to contradict the great and
powerful jerry (despite the validity of my statements). i should have
known that your word somehow means more than US government signed
appropriations. perhaps youre visiting a magical army that run warns
on lifted TJs but jerry the facts will not change just because you said
so. the US military standard is the mile marker hydraulic winch no
matter how much you wish otherwise. i have not said that you wont see
some electrics running around but theyre simply left over.

MM won the RFP/RFB by being the lowest-cost responsive bidder. I was
involved in government bidding activities for 25 years (multi-million
dollar supercomputers) and it's not just best quality that wins, final
cost is a key factor in additon to "can it do what we want it to do"..
Yes Milemarker "won" the bid, they weren't awarded it because some
bureaucrat decided Milemarker had the coolest winch and said something
stupid like 'cost is no object because I want Milemarker'. Those in the
know have always said that Milemarker bought that business with a lower
than a stand-alone profitable bid because they expected to make up for
it by added commercial sales from being able to advertise how they are
suppliers to the military. Ever notice how nearly every ad pushes the
military angle? They had to because Warn was cleaning their clock.
They sure achieved their goal of using the military angle to get people
on board with their product, and it saved the company whose sales were
lackluster at best at the time..

that opinion is ridiculous. the military accepts bids on units meeting
_specific_ criteria and for the sake of bidding, a hydraulic winch and
an electric winch arent comparable! the military first determined that
the hydraulic winch was superior for their uses before bidding was even
an issue.

you didnt say "bid" before, you said they "won the deal" as if the
electric were even a consideration by the time bidding came. they
EARNED "the deal" after years of proving themselves the most rugged,
durable, and dependable winch available. jerry the bid has nothing to
do with the military going hydraulic! the military decided to go
hydraulic after several years of rigorous testing, comparing electric
to hydraulic. by the time bidding came around it was strictly for
hydraulic winches.

bottom line jerry, the electric winches were failing on amphibious
landings and the military needed something that would function EVERY
time. you can stomp your feet and get mad, but thats why they standard
was set.

Well let's just agree to disagree that Milemarker is the best thing
since sliced bread came along. You love Milemarker and tout their
company line as if you worked for them... I think that's great that you
have swallowed their hype hook line and sinker!

So, I stated they are NOT designed and engineered here. I spoke to a
Milemarker engineer at a trade show for my company and he stated,
simply, they bought a new line of winches from China due to their losing
so much business to the electric winch industry. He specifically said
they didn't have much input on what they got other than color and
overall specs.
