oil filter cross reference question
Have some spare oil filters that I thought were left over from an old
car which I no longer have - trying to figure out if I can use them on my newer cars. The two cars I have now: -96 626, 4cyl, recommended fram filter ph6607 -02 Altima, 4cyl, recommeded fram filter ph7317 The cross referencing tool at Fram's web site says that my old filters (STP S-02867) can be cross referenced to all of these fram numbers: PH3593A, PH3950, PH5343, PH6607, PH7317. This sounds like good news to me - but ph6607 & ph7317 (the two models recommended for my cars) look physically different in size. How can the STP filter cross reference both fram models if they're different sizes? Should I not be concerned about this? |

I realize that. All modern filters for the cars he mentioned would have anti-drainback and overpressure valves, as well as adequate flow capacity assuming regular oil changes. For someone trying to use an STP filter - and using Fram as a reference - I figured the finer points would be lost. Texas Parts Guy |

I think I'd just toss an old filter rather than use it on a new vehicle. The paper elements dry out and start to rot, the rubber gasket hardens, the anti-drainback seal hardens and maybe doesn't seat so well, etc. Why take a change to save a few dollars. However, if anybody really likes using old oil filters, I have a couple of 5 or 6 year old cartridge filters for a 1966 MF-175 Tractor I will let you have for the cost of shipping. No gauranteess of quality! Ed |

FYI for everyone - it's wixfilters.com now, not wix.com. I went to
their site, and for my year, make, model, engine, etc. (96 mazda) they said wix part #51357 which does NOT correspond to PH6607. I guess I'll use the frams this time around, chuck the old ones, and maybe use wix filters from here on out. Have others used Wix filters on this board - satisfied with them?? > FRAM seems to be pretty "liberal" on their cross reference #'s. > You might also want to check some other filter sites, such as wix.com etc. Bill wrote: > In article >, wrote: > > >On Mon, 20 Dec 2004 15:36:00 -0500, "Daniel J.
