"CD ERR" with dealer-installed 6-disk changer in 2001 New Beetle

Recently, I've started having problems with my CD
changer--periodically, when I change disks, it beeps and gives me a CD
ERR message, and won't play. Has anyone else seen this? Is there
anything I can do short of replacing the whole thing?

I would suggest starting by replacing all the CD's with other ones.
Maybe it is one or more bad or dirty CD's.
