The MX5 facelift car is out and the 370Z car is out...

Now the previous MX5 had a simple open-mouth trout look to it. Well...it
looks great on a Jaguar but funny on an MX5...so the MX5 looked best in a
dark color. Now we have the new MX5 with a front end with sophisticated air
dam touches and integration. And the straight-on level view is very
good...except that the front-end opening is too large and too much like a
big smile. Then a higher view of the front end or a three-quarters view of
the front end...gives the impression of trying to glob some size. But the
side view of the car is very good. Now this small sports car has been set up
on its wheels rather than designed to be up... so many buyers go to lowering
springs or to larger diameter tires. But does the new MX5 look best in a
dark color or in a light color ?

Now many views of the Power-Retractable-Hard-Top version of the MX5 have an
erie Mercedes-Benz type of quality impression to them...

Oh...and the Sport softtop model of the new MX5 has a strange plastic lip
and literally looks like a mouth lip.

Now for the 370Z...Well...the 350Z is a neat package with a good front view
and a good side view. But the view of the Coupe back looks like a 1951
Chevrolet...and so the 350Z Convertible is the best car. And so here the
thinking is that the car should be available with a simple hardtop roof the
shape of the convertible top...and that would be great. Except that the 370Z
is so much more extreme than the 350Z that there is not much hope. There is
more rounding and very large and overly simple fender rounding...and a
plastic lip on the front end. Well...it looks like a Rollie Pollie.

Of course there is the Honda S2000 that is expensive for a four-cylinder.
But there are no styling problems as the car is just very much okay in the
way that it looks. But the driving position is said to be less than average
and the car is in its last year of production. But the S2000 no longer has
to compete with the BMW Z4 on price as the Z4 has added a power-top and the
price has gone up by over $10,000.

Well...the top of the S2000 may be poked-up a little too high and
reminiscent of the Datsun sports car of the 1960's.

In fact compare the 370Z to the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. The Porsche is
plenty rounded but not extreme...

Okay...I got a closer look at a 2009 MX-5.

The grille differences between the Sport and the Touring are okay once the
surprise of two different grilles is past.

And the front-end does have sophisticated air-dam touches and
integration...and integrates well into the fender flares.

Now...the 2009 is lower on its tires and thus the fender flares become
functional in nature...and then they reach a level of sophisticated design.

No...I had a source that said that the 2009 MX-5 was lower on its tires.
Measurements do not confirm the source...

But an optional suspension package includes shocks and those strut-type
shocks might have a different spring perch and thus might lower the car 1/2"
on its tires.

But many MX-5 users are lowering the car 1 1/4"... with approved
after-market springs.

The average car user would be better off to just fill up the wheel opening
with a larger diameter tire...

Well...consider the Solstice.

It has a very strong frame...and a separate frame and bodywork. Therefore it
could become a racing class at your local oval. Or it could be your Le Mans
entry with racing tires and 400 HP. I don't know where the 400 HP would come
from but the frame could handle it...

But the car consumer can't be sold a car on a feature of frame strength. So
the Solstice has California-custom-car-style...based on a combination of
California custom car shops and international sports car racing in
California in the early 1960's. And it sits up in the air but is designed to
sit up as it sits on very large tires. And it can have very large tires
because...it has a strong frame. Also the car is also very wide and that
makes an exotic look. In fact the straight-on back view might make you think
that you pulled up behind a Corvette.

Problems ? Because the Solstice is so heavy-duty it does not get the fuel
mileage...and must have a large counter-balanced four-cylinder which rev
slower than smaller four-cylinders. And it seems to have the fit and finish
of a 1974 Nova. I don't know how the turbo is holding up but the base model
only has differential problems.
Now...sports car fans don't prefer the steering or the shifting of the
Solstice.
