Patrol Car slams into Car on Intersection.............Police Car Camera
See what happened, from the Police-Car-Cam point of view, when an
officer was driving with his sirens and emergency-lights on, and a car did not yield or stop for him on an intersection: http://www.jumpingpixels.com/sheriffs2.html |

Most cops I see in that situation slow down a bit for the intersections, because people miss the lights and all far too often. D |

This the first time I have seen an emergency vehicle, NOT do that. |

This works very much better in getting a sense of its location. Graham |

Its not like he didn't have a chance to avoid it. There appeared to be something like 2 seconds or so to see that the car wasn't even slowing. Sweve, for pete's sake. Dave Head |

I'm generally always able to see the lights, but the sirens do suck - have ever since they got rid of the mechanical sirens. The electronic ones just don't make all that much noise. Its loud if you're standing beside it, but try to hear it with the windows up and the radio playing, even at a reasonable volume. Plus, I think they at some point must have decided to make the sirens quieter because it disturbed some people. >It's the difference between a mechanical rotation and just quick flashes >in geting a direction on it. Plus, the lights are very compressed vertically, so there's only a few inches of height, rather than the 6 - 8 inches 30 years ago. They're trying to make 'em less visible (duh!) so they can sneak up on speeders. >I get direction right away is when the emergency vehicle >is visible and picked up in a normal scan. But hidden behind other traffic >or a building, trees, whatever, it takes a bit of time to locate it with >the modern lights. and the weak siren. Dave Head |

This cop didn't >do that. They may be "required" to slow at intersections, etc, but is that what you want 'em doing if some bad guy has a knife at your throat? This recent idea that emergency vehicles don't have to treat their responses as emergencies just sucks. They turn on the lights and sirens, the public has, traditionally, been expected to stop for 'em and/or get the hell out of the way. And, of course, this all goes out the window in a pursuit situation, anyway. since the perp doesn't even _have_ any lights and sirens, so if you hear the siren of the police car chasing him, you damn well better not be stumbling into any intersections without knowing the entire situation, or you'll get him in your driver's door, likely as not. If you got the latest gang of home invaders banging on your front door, I'm betting you're hoping the cop is blowing _all_ the damn lights and stops... Dave Head |
