Default 95 Passat with a racy auto tranny

When I am driving my B4 Passat, the RPMs will race up to the 5000's as
it switches between gears. It is usually ok when I am city driving,
but on the highway it gets close to redlining before it settles down a
little, but not much better. I have to drive it in 3 on the highway
just to keep the tach under control. The D gear gives the worse
result on the highway. I read that it may be that the TCM needs to be
flashed or maybe the VSS is shot.

Any advice before I dump all my cash into my local Bavarian
specialist?

Have you lost battery power any time recently?

Well, it sat in a garage for 2 years as a backup vehicle. I am now
using it as a primary. I didn't have to charge the bat, but i didn't
get it tested either.

It may need to reprogram itself. My experience with a '99 VR6 Eurovan
auto is about 500 miles and about 20 starts before it cleaned up all
the idle kinks and smooth-shift kinks. But after that, no problems
whatsoever.

wrong answer. We replace batteries in the shop and never have to do a
reprogram or drive it 500miles. If the fluid level is ok then get it scanned
for fault codes. But most likely you have internal transmission problems.

"It may need to reprogram itself" wrong answer. The TCM(trans computer)
isn't that smart! We replace batteries in the shop and never have to do a
reprogram or drive it 500miles. If the fluid level is ok then get it scanned
for fault codes. But most likely you have internal transmission problems.

Thanks for all the answers. Not the ones I wanted to read, but honest
ones are the best ones. I guess I better limp over to my guy and
prepare for the worst news. Damn!

No no no - first reset it yourself. Seeing as it does shift and get all the
gears, this probably isn't a big problem and it's just a confused ECU and
nothing wrong w/the trans.

Find the recent thread on this board that has something like "beetle
transmisson"...it was just discussed in there how to reset the automatic
trans' ECU.
