Do converter thieves favor late model cars??
I suspect it doesn't matter. Even if the catalytic converter is all rusted
out, the platinum inside is worth the same whether it's 1 month or 20 years old. Just my opinion. |

I was under the impression that stolen converters were sold to shady mechanics as-is to get cars to pass emission tests. -- Paul Hovnanian ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Procrastinators: The leaders for tomorrow. |

An organized ring (or maybe even individual) will steal to order. A sharp operator will know he interchangability, too. |

Platinum is selling at $2000 an ounce. Close call. It's now at roughly $1800 after peaking at over $2100. Like what's happening with gold, it appears that the futures traders are dumping precious metals like they have been doing with corporate stocks to jack with oil and gas. However, just like with anything metal, there is a huge problem with stealing and selling metal. Here in KC, catalytic converters have been stolen at car dealerships and repair shops. This goes along with thieves stealing A/C units, piping and wiring to sell copper. We even had an arrest of a local ammo plant employee stealing some of the ammo to sell the copper. Since the ammo is that used by our military, it's likely that employee will be incarcerated for a while since the target of the theft was the organized crime ring best known as the government. |

Platinum is selling at $2000 an ounce. But what does extraction cost? Recyclers certaily aren't going to pay anything near $2000 for a quantity of converters that contain 1 oz. -- Paul Hovnanian ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Have gnu, will travel. |
