A good friend of mine dated a couple of English women for a while-at different times, of course. We, that being my wife and I, got to be friends with one of these individuals, the other one was a bit shrill for our temperament!:~) Conversations being what they are, and time being what it is, I find that I think, after a trip to England as well, that the US makes a bit more sense than England does, especially with regards to things like local control of specific kinds of issues and laws. That being said, the most important thing to take into consideration if you are considering a move, is the weather. Another very good friend, who lived in L.A. (that's California, you know?) for a good, long while, once said to me, with regards to earthquakes, that sure, in some regions you get the occasional tornado or the occasional hurricane, but in Sunny, Southern California, the weather is perfect nearly every day. She had a point. That day was sunny and mild-possibly as high as eighty degrees with lows in the sixties or, gasp, as low as the fifties. Partly cloudy. Sunny. Temperate. Beautiful. But the downside is a big downside. Weather being the biggest consideration, you have a rather large area from which to choose. Do you like deserts? Mountains? Plains? Coastal plains? Beaches? Hills? Forests? Jungles? Swamps? Or nearly any combination of those and more? Look long enough and you'll find it. Personally, and this comes as no surprise to most long time readers of ramva, I'm partial to Texas. I've been here and there, traveled north, west, and east in the US. Even spent a fair amount of time in various other places in the US. Texas is home to me. But Texas is a pretty large place. Even here, in just one state, you have your choice of mountains, hills, plains, costal plains, forest, jungle, or swamp. And many combinations. Want a river to live on? Got lots of them. Lakes? Plenty. Are highways what make your heart go pitter-patter? There are few better anywhere in the US. But really it comes down to weather. The cultures across the US are very different as well. Want American Indians? Cajuns? Norwegians? Funny talking Yankees? And don't forget, California is a Land Unto Itself; which means it is a very nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there-but then again, that can describe, for me, most of the rest of the world!:~) Good Luck! -- John Willis (Remove the Primes before e-mailing me) |

oups.com... > In the north east we do have have bears, cayotes and plenty of > dangerous snakes, though... Bah! The NE has nothing of the sort compared to other parts of the USA. It is typical of a New Englander to think they are the centre of the country. Your worst snake is the Timber Rattler which has a bite so inferior that there's only a 1:100 chance of killing a human. Your bears are of the small and timid variety. Now you want snakes with real venom, go to Florida. You want real bears, go West, young man. Coyote are not dangerous to humans. They are timid scavengers. I lived with them daily for years on the old place, 5,550 acres of choice Minnesota bluffs full of deer, coyote, wild turkey, and all that sort. |

OH! And among the other issues of the United States is the language problem!
It is likely that if you were to go to the Deep South you wouldn't understand a word they say. Now by Deep South I mean Cairo, Illoinis. Then there is the Carolina accent which is smooth, beautiful. Texans, well they can be understood but they have nothing to say! (ducking and running) |

When did I infer that?? Eehh.. <how to put this>.. I am not a new Englander, nor a Yankee or born here. Actually am from a similar neck of the woods as Rich (Holland, just across the North Sea). I probably like the NE because we get changes of season and near its coast it is a maritime climate (good boating, fishing, excellent seafood). Summers are pretty nice and fairly long, winters can be cold but are relatively short. Growing season (in s. CT anyway) is pretty long. (Not as good as the southern states, though) Being near NYC, there's always work. About the wild life: merely trying to point out to Rich that we do have wild life up here and some of those are snakes. Almost hit a deer on my way home. Just pointing out we have lots of stuff living here. I am not comparing dick sizes so what's up with the comparisons? sheesh.. I don't think I spit on where you live, did I, as I am sure it is really nice. Been many places in the US and don't think I'd leave New England. But to each his own. There are many really nice places in the US, my second is probably Virginia and the Carolinas, third Washington state. Rich, you have your work cut out for you. |

If I could afford to spend a month or two every winter in the Carribean, it would be even better. |

No more snow shoveling, heavy coats - just sit under an umbrella with a tall drink in one hand and a fishing pole in the other.. <...sigh...> <lightbulb!> Hey Rich, how about you move to the Carribean instead?? Tim and I will come help you move in as long as it is during winter! |
