Default 97 Ford Explorer Control Trak

I have a 97 Explorer XLT...

I had Ford replace the engine and transfer case, both junk yard parts and
now I can't get it to stay out of 4 wheel auto. It hops when I turn corners
and sometimes stops the truck.

I removed the front drive shaft to confirm that it was the problem does
anyone know if there will be a problem if I leave the front drive axle
off??

Thanks,
Carl

Well, your 4WD won't work anymore if you leave it off ;-)

seriously, if this is an issue for you, you could always install manual
hubs. Some of us really like them better. It gives us more control over when
the 4X4 is engaged or not. Without the hubs engaging, it doesn't make a hill
of beans if the X-fer case is engaged or not. The hubs aren't all expensive
of an investment in your own peace of mind.

I can't figure out why you haven't taken it back to Ford to have them put it
back together correctly...

Your symptoms sound like one or more speed sensors in the transfer case are
either gunked up, defective, or not hooked up correctly. Do you get the 4WD
lights flashing on the dash? That usually indicates the GEM sees this
problem and will disable the 4WD.

I did... they said it is not their problem and they wired it right. They
said that it was due to the fact that it was a junk yard transfercase.
Donley in Galion,OH was not much help after the repair.

When I first Got it back the 4wd lights did blink for about an hours
flashing some codes and then they stopped. After that the alternator went
out. So...Donley told me the 4wd lights were flashing because my alternator
was going out...The flashing happened of course before I saw any signs of
the alternator.

Word to the wise...Fix it yourself if you can!!

You're probably just leaving out bits of the story that are irrelevant from
your point of view, but I'd think they would have wanted to fix it or at
least tell you what was needed to fix it, before installing it (or would
have done so, once they did a test drive after installation). Given the
condition in whuch they handed it over to you, it's somewhat a safety
hazard.

Still scratching my head, as replacing the hubs seems like a round-about way
to 'fix' the problem and not exactly cheap, either.
