Default What happ to the Pits?

Ive been going to the Pits for around a decade and over the past years Ive
noticed the forum traffic there is gradually fading away. A few rFactor
posts but nothing on GTR2 or any Simbin products. Why nothing on the best
current Sim (GTR2?) Has activism gone astray at The Pits and pulled the
user base away with it or are they just focusing on becoming the next
Simbin/Corecodec/etc/etc?

RSC while a great source of info is about as painful of a browse as can be
had on the net due to it's wild swings in perf.

Simracing is technically better than it's ever been yet interest seems to be
dropping instead of growing. Go figure...

Happy Thanksgivings folks.

Mitch

I'm hoping the guys at RSC will be getting new servers of their own
soon. Right now they are riding on someone's kindness I believe.

RSC could be the new leader, but they have just GOT to fix their server
issues. I just can't stand to go there very often because of it.

Being a dormant member of the Pits Crew, I won't - can't - speak for Jan
or anyone else there.. but The Pits is really an rFactor modding group
now, which is why you won't find anything about GTR2 or any SimBin
product there.

That makes sense. Too bad though, every joeblow and his cousin is making a
mod and no one else has ever been "The Pits"

Shame such kindness does not extend to servers that can crunch the data
a bit faster eh?

>From hanging around a few places recently I think the whole scene has

got a little quieter. I don't really think this is a bad thing, it is
symptomatic of the genre's current vitality.

It seems that more people are actually spending their time driving sims
than they are reading and moaning on forums about them.

This is great in essence but I do find it mildly sad that people do not
discuss at length the fun they are having, talk setups or banter about
the previous night's race with glee and aplomb... Its not a bad thing,
obviously, but it is sad that the time is always found to moan when
there nothing out there to drive.

I wish some of those mods would make their way to nr2003.. even though they
can only use cup, cts, pta physics ect... still it would be fun to race
the models around.

the whelen mod died and I guess the dirt late model mod died as well...

A few theories -

a) A lot of people were stung by Simbin with GTR and GTR2 still has a lot of
shortcomings - hows the online - how many online per server?

b) whether you're a rookie or not, you take a look at rFactor and see a huge
mess - too much frigging around to get to the point of sitting at the
wheel/pedal set and actually getting to the simming experience. rFactor
could be brilliant if they would pay the authors of tracks and mods a token
fee, sanction their work after their in house quality testing and then
hosting the stuff they give the thumbs up too. I'll be ****ed if I'm going
to spend hours per week or even per day hunting down tracks and mods and
then hunting down the eternal tweaks to those tracks/mods - way too much
frigging about.

c) Sim racing is a huge mess - it needs a world championship for starters.
Which will probably require some sort of "official" organisation.

Will iRacing be the answer to all the above?

rFactorCentral is pretty much the default clearinghouse for all things
rF. User ratings, user files such as setups, etc. Works well IMO.

I agree, and the only reason I run with rFactor is because I know these
tricks, the amount of people I have spoken to who are new to it and
having a nightmare is absurd. Though attempts to setup some sort of
"modders guild" went awry AFAIK because people railed against the idea
that someone might be telling them what is good or not. rfcentral user
ratings is all good and well, except that some of the high rated stuff
I have looked at sucks.

I'd say there is a pretty high chance of that. Maybe not to start
with, but long term, I'd put alot of money on it (John henry already
has!).

Jon.
