Default Grand Cherokee Orvis.. how does this work?

Hi,

I've recently bought a 1998 GC Orvis, but there's not user manual with it.
I've had one on order with the dealer, but they don't seem to be
interested..so.. a couple of questions..

Anyone know where I can maybe pick up a user manual? New, or used, I don't
mind..

There seems to an economy switch - what does this do, exactly? there seems
to be some sort of change takes place, perhaps in the gearbox.

The rear view mirror has an illuminated switch, which doesn't seem to do
anything - I assume it's supposed to be an anti-dazzle feature?

There are a few other things that are a bit of a mystery to me - like -
Quadra Trac, I think it's called - the vehicle is always in 4 WD. How does
this differ from my previous jeep which was switchable between 2WD & 4WD? I
mean, what's the difference between Quadra Trac and my old one, in 4WD mode.

I'm not too savvy on car things, so, take it easy, please!

I'm in Ireland, incidentally.

Nichollette

Have you tried Ebay for the user manual? The Jeep pages on Wikipedia aren't
so bad:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Grand_Cherokee
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadra-Trac#Quadra-Trac

If your vehicle has similar equipment to American models, it looks as if you
might have a low range four wheel drive lock capability, which would be a
good thing for off road use.

Maybe you can talk someone into scanning a user manual for you.

Cordialment,

Earle

The owners manuals are no longer available by simply going to
www.jeep.com and clicking on the link "For Owners" and heading to the
manuals section?

When did that go away?

http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/

Or go straight to http://www.techauthority.com where the entire owners
manual packet is available for $20

Hi Nichollette,
This five year older Factory Service Manual is the only thing I could
find in ZJ model, it's very close to your equipment, other than it doesn't
have 5.9L which is the same block as the 5.2L:
http://www.onlinefreeebooks.net/auto...ments-pdf.html
Download free 1993 Chrysler ZJ Jeep Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer Service
Manual and Supplements.pdf, Part01.rar, Part02.rar, Part03.rar, Part04.rar,
Part05.rar, Part06.rar, Part07.rar, Part08.rar, Part09.rar, Part10.rar,
Part11.rar, Part12.rar, Part13.rar, Part14.rar, Part15.rar, Part16.rar,
Part17.rar, Part18.rar, Part19.rar, Part20.rar
Download all rar files (total 20 files, 55 MB), put it in a directory then
run winrar.
On the older model the dash switch locked out of overdrive and increased
the shift points.

As usual, late, and with a convoluted answer that may or may not even
work.

You giving out guarantees with your ancient information?

Hoooo-eeeee.

The rear view mirror auto dims when the switch is in and someone with
bright headlights is behind you. You are right in that it isn't a big
deal or a big amount of difference.

The economy switch probably changes up a gear earlier thus giving you a
negligible increase in fuel consumption at the expense of making your
vehicle feel slow.

Your previous Jeep, switchable between 2wd and 4wd, had a "part time"
system. This means that when it was in 4x4 mode, power was delivered to
both the front and rear axles which rotate at the same speed.
Unfortunately, tyres aren't exactly the same size and when going round
corners the two axles don't travel the same distance, so something has
to give - so you have to use part time 4x4 on loose surfaces where
slippage is possible. Or use it on hard surfaces and let your
transmission break.

The Quadratrac is a "full time" 4x4 system. This means that power is
delivered to both the front and rear axle, but there is a differential or
viscous coupling which enables the front propshaft to spin at a
different speed to the rear propshaft. This means that you are free to
use your 4x4 on hard surfaces. You probably can lock the coupling to
effectively turn it into a "part time" system (on loose surfaces).
