Default floor mat color and replacement?

How does one tell what color is used for the interior? Is it part of the
VIN or otherwise documented somewhere? My wife's 96 Cabrio needs new floor
mats and I'd like to get OEM ones that match properly. The color isn't
quite tan but not grey, sorta in-between.

If/when I figure out the color, whose the best/cheapest source for OEM
replacements?

Look under the seat for a proper color match via your or someone else's
eyeballs.
