147 Using oil
Lesley's 147 2.0TS is using quite a bit of oil.
The oil is very clean, the seller told us it had a recent service with oil & filter change. So clean that it is almost impossible to see it on the dip-stick, you have to feel for it. Folowing it last week I noticed when she floored it to overtake there was a brief dark cloud from the exhaust, and I could smell burnt oil, but normal driving there is no sign of smoke. Engine oil is clean, no scum in oil or coolant. Any suggestions? Rings? Valve Guides? They All Do That Sir? -- Rob Pearson 156 1.9jtd sportwagon (now) 164 V6 Lusso (gone) |

It sounds to me like it's a bit light and something heavier might well stop both the puffs and the usage. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk |

Heavier oil sounds favourite to me - cheaper as well ;^/ -- Rob Pearson 156 1.9jtd sportwagon (now) 164 V6 Lusso (gone) |

My mechanic uses a bog standard Castrol (20/40?) - ie. whatever he buys in bulk for 'general purpose servicing'. Which may explain why neither of our 156s used oil like they're supposed to. -- SteveH |

ISTR I use GTX of the same semi synth type and have done for about ever. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk |
