Oil Filter Magnets?

I've been reading a lot of articles lately about using magnets together with
the oil filter to trap metalic micro-shavings. One version was a flexible
wrap that went on the outside of the filter, another version looked like a
capsule that was dropped into the input opening of the oil filter. Both
were to magnetize the filter and trap free floating metal shavings. Any
value to these products? In theory, it sounds great, but if my engine is
circulating that many shavings, I'm thinking its time for a new engine. Any
experience or comments?

Used to was the oil drain plugs had magnets in them for just such a
purpose.

If we use only high quality filters and change them regularly, there is
little benefit to be derived from what you describe. Good filters will trap
articles down to about 5 microns in size.... As long as we don't try to
extend the service interval and run an appropriate weight of oil, the bypass
valve should never open and any offending particles will remain lodged in
the filter medium.

Thanks for reminding me! I just want to stick a refrigerator magnet on
my filter, and I keep forgetting to do it.
